Quorum, the global leader in unified recovery, recently conducted a study asking top IT professionals questions about their current backup and disaster recovery (BDR) solutions and where they see BDR heading in the future.
Overwhelmingly, IT professionals seem to be leaning more toward cloud-based solutions or hybrid cloud and onsite solutions. Of those asked, 89 percent reported planning on implementing more cloud-based disaster recovery.
There also seems to be a trend of companies using more than three, and sometimes more than five different disaster recovery solutions to protect their networks. Using these many different technologies is not efficient or effective when it comes to speed of recovery and ease of use. Ninety percent of respondents said they would like to consolidate their current BDR solutions to one dashboard.
While 98 percent of respondents reported that speed of recovery is critical, the overwhelming majority said it takes over an hour to recover from a server failure. Companies’ need for speed of recovery conflicts with many solution’s slow recovery rate, and is an obvious flaw in disaster recovery.
Security emerged as a trend within the study as well. More than half of the respondents reported that they were more concerned about security from outside threats than they were from a natural disaster or hardware malfunctions.
It is clear that IT professionals are frustrated with outdated, complicated BDR solutions, and are gradually migrating to virtual and cloud-based solutions. Disaster recovery solutions have come a long way, and IT professionals are expecting faster, more efficient and less complicated products, they are ready to make the switch.
